Fog catcher project · Los Sin Agua

Rural communities in Peru with access to drinking water through fog capture technology.

What is a fog catcher

A mesh captures moisture from the coastal fog and turns it into drinking water. Each structure produces up to 300 litres a day for communities that today rely on water trucks. Los Sin Agua builds and maintains the fog catchers we fund from Fluye Peru.

04Who we work with

More organisations, more impact

Los Sin Agua bring water to communities in Peru. And they are not the only ones. From Peru we also work with organisations in education, health and culture.

  • Movimiento Peruanos Sin Agua was founded in 2005 with a clear goal. Water for everyone. Its president, Abel Cruz, pushed an idea as simple as it is powerful. Getting water out of the fog.

Their fog catchers capture moisture from the air and turn it into water for drinking and irrigation. In areas with good fog, each structure can collect around 300 litres a day. They also work on rainwater harvesting, wastewater treatment and desalination.

It is not a small project. More than 60,000 families have benefited, and they won the Antonio Brack Egg National Environmental Award in 2015 and the Google Challenge in 2017.

Every quarter we will publish the project numbers and dated photos here. Even when they are small.

  • Mosqoy means dream in Quechua. Since 2006 they have worked with Quechua communities in the Andes so that tourism and development do not wipe out their culture.

They support more than 200 weavers in 11 communities, keeping hand weaving with natural fibres and dyes alive. And at Casa Mosqoy, in Cusco, they give young people scholarships, housing and mentoring so they can go to university. More than 70 have already graduated.

  • Misión Huascarán works in rural Áncash, in more than 40 villages above 3,000 metres. They do not focus on one thing but on four at once. Health, nutrition, education and housing.

They run mobile health posts with more than 1,100 consultations a month, a nutrition programme that has cut child anaemia from over 44% to around 9%, and a textile workshop, Tejiendo Esperanza, that gives work to rural women.

It is not water, but it is the same idea underneath. Where you happen to be born should not decide what you can become.
